1. 서울대에 인문학 최고위과정이 생긴 사연은?
저는 1985년의 봄을 런던에서 맞았습니다. 현대중공업 런던사무소에서 근무했는데, 마침 영국의 한 머천트 뱅크(merchant bank)에서 인턴으로 일할 기회가 생겼습니다. 그곳에서 만난 사람들. 여러 가지 주제를 넘나들며 자유롭게 토론하는 그들의 전공이 문학, 철학 등 이른바 문사철(문학, 역사, 철학)이라는 사실은 제게 큰 충격이었습니다.
문사철을 전공으로 하여 이를 바탕으로 한 후 경제 경영에 대한 지식을 도서관에서 혼자 알아서 공부했던 그들은 '사람에 대한 이해'를 바탕으로 경영을 했습니다.
큰 깨달음. 이 후 전 현대 입사시험에서 전공을 보지 않으려는 시도를 했고, 이렇게 입사한 사람들이 회사가 역경 속에서 답을 못 찾고 있을 때 전혀 새로운 시각의 해결책을 내어놓는 것을 보고는, 경영은 '인간에 관한 것'이라는 생각을 더욱 굳히게 되었습니다.
인문학, 문사철은 CEO들에겐 새로운 도전입니다.
서울대 인문학 최고위과정을 계획할 시점, 서울대 상대 동창회장이었던 저는 동기였던 서울대 경영대 학장께 최고경영자 대상의 인문학 과정을 만들것을 제안했고, 이것이 인문대에 개설되었습니다. 그리고 저는 이 과정의 전반적인 커리큘럼을 짜는 데 함께 했습니다. 서울대 인문학 최고위 과정은 이렇게 'CEO의 리더쉽과 인문학적 소양'이라는 기반 위에 생겨난 것입니다.
2. 나에게 가장 큰 도전은 무엇이었나?
여러분들의 인생에 가장 큰 도전은 무엇이었습니까?
누가 제게 가장 큰 도전이 무엇이었습니까? 하고 묻는 다면, 저는 2002년에 '2010년 여수엑스포유치위원회장', 대통령 특사자격으로 알제리 대통령을 만나던 때를 꼽곤 합니다.
왜 여수인가? 알제리 대통령은 왜 여수에서 엑스포가 열려야 하는지를 물었습니다. 그리고 저는 그에 대해 답해야 했습니다.
2002년 당시, 2010년 엑스포를 두고 경쟁하는 나라는 중국, 러시아, 멕시코, 한국. 한국의 여수 엑스포의 슬로건은 "바다와 육지의 만남"이었습니다.
"왜 여수인가?"라는 알제리 대통령의 물음에, 저는 "바다와 육지의 만남"이라고 답했습니다.
지구상 유일한 분단국가 한국은 2010년이면 통일을 할 것이라고 했습니다. 독일은 동독과 서독의 만남이 있은지 20년 만에 공식적인 통일을 했으니, 우리는 10년이면 통일을 할 것이라 했습니다. 그리고 그 때, 지구상의 유일한 분단국가인 남과 북이 통일 되는 그때는 바다와 육지가 만나는 것과 같은 세계역사상 중요한 일이 될 것이고, 이를 세계 모든 국가가 엑스포를 계기로 축복한다는 것은 전 지구적으로 의미있는 일이 될 것이라 답했습니다.
당황스런 질문에 대해 도전으로 응수했던 그때, 그때가 제게는 인생에서 가장 큰 도전이었습니다.
