어느 저주받은 학번의 고백
나는 1994년에 대학에 입학했다. 세칭 명문이라고 하는 SKY 대학은 아니지만, 그래도 이름만 들으면 사람들이 알아주는 대학이다. 대학 생활 4년은 정말로 즐거웠다. 학교 공부도 남들에게 뒤지지 않을 만큼은 했으며 산악동아리에도 가입하여 산을 누비고 다니기도 했다. 하루하루가 아쉬울 정도로 즐거운 나날이었다.
학교를 다니는 동안 용돈은 내가 벌어서 썼다. 4년 내내 고등학생 과외를 하면서 월 60만 원 정도는 벌었다. 그중 30만 원 정도는 교통비와 용돈으로 쓰고 나머지는 학교 등록금과 배낭 여행 경비로 모아두었다. 넉넉하지 않은 집안 형편이라 어학연수는 꿈도 못 꾸는 처지였지만, 배낭여행은 꼭 한번 다녀오고 싶었다. 또한 시골에서 농사를 지으며 4남매 뒷바라지를 하는 부모님이 안쓰러워서 나 하나만이라도 부담을 덜어드리고 싶었다.
4학년 2학기가 되자, 취업시즌이 도래했다. 이제는 취업 전선에 뛰어들어 돈을 벌어야 했다.
그러나 1997년 11월 21일 절대로 잊을 수 없는, 저주의 날이 밝았다.
임창렬 경제부총리는 전국 TV 생중계를 통해서 “정부는 IMF에 구제금융을 요청했습니다”로 시작되는 발표문을 굳은 표정으로 읽어 내려갔다. 외환보유고가 70억 달러밖에 안 된다느니, 나라가 모라토리엄moratorium으로 들어간다느니, 외국인 투기세력이 홍콩 선물시장에서 원화를 팔아치우기 때문에 원화 환율이 급등한다는 뉴스들이 계속 언론에 보도되었지만, 국가 부도 사태가 올 줄은 상상도 못했다. 사실은 국가 부도 사태라는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지도 몰랐다. ‘뭔가 큰일이 벌어지고 있구나’라고 생각은 했지만 그것이 내 인생에 어떤 영향을 미치게 될지는 전혀 눈치채지 못했다.
얼마 지나지 않아 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지는 분명해졌다. 취업시장이 꽁꽁 얼어붙은 것이었다. 국내 굴지의 현대, 삼성도 구조조정을 해야만 하는 상황이 되었다. 은행들도 여러 개가 정리되었다. 웬만한 그룹에서는 신규 채용을 검토조차 하지 못했다. 기존 직원들도 내보내야 하는 판국에 신입사원 선발은 가당치도 않은 상황이었다.
졸업은 했는데 취직할 곳은 없었다.
상황이 이러하니 취업이 되든 안 되든 모두 암울한 시간을 보내긴 마찬가지였다.
동기들 중 일부는 대학원 진학, 군 입대, 어학연수 등의 방법으로 취업을 2~3년 늦췄다. 나는 대졸 미취업자를 대상으로 한 IT과정을 수강하며 시간을 보냈다. 그 과정은 학원비의 경우 나라에서 지원해 주고, 교통비 등 명목으로 매월 25만 원가량의 용돈까지 받을 수 있었다. 비전공자로서 IT를 배우는 것이 쉽지 않았지만 그것이라도 해야 했다. 이력서에 공백을 만들 수 없는 일이기도 했지만, 그 기술이 취업에 한줄기 희망이 될 것이라 생각했다. IT는 벤처 붐을 타고 최고로 뜨는 산업이었기 때문이다.
그러나 다시 두드린 취업시장은 대우채 사태로 또다시 칼바람이 일었다. 대졸 미취업자 과정도 크게 도움이 되지는 않았다. IT를 전공한 학생도 취업이 잘 안 되는 판에 학원에서 몇 달간 배운 실력으로 취업한다는 것은 가당치도 않은 일이었다.
이제는 뭔가를 결정해야 하는 시점에 도달했다.
중소기업에라도 취업을 하든지, 자영업을 시작하든지, 당장 먹고살 방법을 찾아야만 했다. 명절에도 고향을 내려가지 못했다. 용돈을 받아야 하는 입장이다 보니 시골에서 어렵게 농사를 지으시는 부모님을 뵐 면목이 없었다.
마침 주변에 학원 운영을 하는 분이 내게 학원 강사를 해보라고 권유했다. 유명한 입시학원에서 만든 중학생 대상 내신 관리 종합반 학원이었다. 나는 그 학원 영어 강사로 월요일부터 토요일까지 오후에 출근해서 밤늦게까지 일하게 되었다. 일요일은 격주로 출근하고, 1년에 4번 있는 시험 때는 일요일도 출근해서 시험 대비반 강의를 맡아야 했다. 그렇게 따지면 출근 안 하는 일요일이 별로 없었다.
급여는 좋은 편이었다. 월 160만 원으로 시작해서 금세 200만 원이 넘었다. 세금도 거의 안 냈다.
하지만 경제적인 측면에서만 생각하면 이 정도 돈을 손에 쥐는 일자리를 찾기는 쉬운 일이 아니었다.
동기들은 다들 결혼이 늦어졌다.
안정적 일자리가 생길 때까지 결혼을 늦추는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 일이었다. 그러다 보니 혼기를 놓친 친구들이 많았다. 남자 동기들은 다들 이래저래 결혼하고 애도 낳고 나름 그럭저럭 살았지만, 여자 동기들은 혼기를 놓치면서 결혼시장에서도 밀려났다. 취업시장은 물론이고 결혼시장에서도 기회를 잡지 못한 것이다.
친구들의 아이 돌잔치에 갈 때면 결혼은 못하더라도 아이는 하나 낳고 싶다는 생각을 한다. 결혼이야 늦게라도 좋은 사람 만나면 할 수 있지만 아이를 낳는 것은 시간 제약이 있기 때문이다.
하지만 미혼모에 대해 백안시하고, 가족들에게도 소외당하는 사회 풍조에서부터 미혼모가 되면 바로 저소득층으로 전락하는 복지제도까지, 아이를 낳아 키우는 것은 상상도 못할 일이라고 결론을 내린다.
우리들에게 내려진 저주는, 그렇게 끝이 나지 않았다.
