새해 들어 맞는 첫 주 월요일. 실로암 시각장애인 복지관의 새해 예배로 귀한 하루를 엽니다.
기록적인 폭설로 지하철도 차도도 다 마비됐거만, 많은 분들이 참석하셨습니다. 하느님의 은총이 미처 세상 구석구석까지 다 전해지지 못한 듯, 눈 속의 광명을 나눠가지지 못한 분들을 여기서 참 많이도 뵙게 됩니다. 불편한 눈으로 험한 길 찾아오시니, 저마다 간직하신 마음의 빛은 저 같은 사람보다 훨씬 눈부신가 봅니다.
오늘은 제가 꺼낸 이야기 대신, 다른 분들이 전해주신 메시지만 전할까 합니다. 폭설에도 불구 영광스런 지각을 하신 최동익 관장님. 저를 소개하며 '폭설에도 이계안 전 의원 님은 제 시간에 맞춰오셨다'고 하시니 과찬이십니다. 눈이 성한 저의 제 시간 당도와 불편하신 당신의 지각이 어찌 같을 수 있을까요.

"지하철에서 사람들마다 내게 '눈도 불편하신 분께서 이 폭설에 어딜 가시려느냐'고 하더군요."
그는 "그럼에도 여기엔 기쁘게 찾아왔다"고 밝힙니다. "이토록 눈이 와도 출근할 수 있는 일터가 있다는것이 얼마나 기쁜 일인가 합니다."
마음의 빛이란, 본디 육안으로는 미처 더듬지 못하는 것을 이렇듯 들여다보는 것이겠지요.
행사가 끝이 나고, 관장님 일행과는 티타임 한번 가질 여유가 주어졌죠. 그리고 여기선 성기복 목사님께서 감사기도를 통해 또 한번, 제게 이 폭설을 감사토록 하시네요.

비단 이 분 뿐만은 아닙니다. 오늘 모이신 분들, 이 중 시각장애인분들의 거동을 보면, 정말 많은 것을 느끼게 만들어요. 최 관장님께서도 이날 예배에서 "하느님과 우리는 똑같은 눈과 글자로 통한다"고 하셨듯, 이 분들은 불편한 육안을 대신해 마음으로 세상을 보려 끊임없이 노력한답니다.
육신 건강한 자도 행보하기 힘든 대설 속에서 이리저리 더듬으며 부지런히 살아가는 사람들. 그 노력이 곧 삶이요, 생활. 비록 글자를 볼 수는 없어도 다른 통로로 끝내 성한 눈의 우리와 마주하니 그 도구가 바로 점자입니다. 복지관 여기저기마다 올록볼록 새겨진 점자는 그 증명의 기록이죠.
