당고개는 본래 당현이라 불렸다고 합니다. 고개를 넘어가는 사람들은 산짐승의 습격을 대비해 돌을 두 손에 들고서 고개를 넘었고, 무사히 넘을 땐 그 돌을 던져놓았죠. 그런데 그것이 모여 서낭당(성황당)을 이뤘고, 그렇게 해서 그 고개는 당고개라는 이름을 얻었습니다.
그 당고개를 찾아가 넘어봤습니다. 29일의 이계안입니다.
"안녕하세요..."
"무슨 눈이 이렇게도 와요 그래?"
주민에게 인사를 거니 곧장 눈 이야기를 화답 받네요. 그렇습니다. 이 날은 싸락눈이 쏟아져 내렸죠. 가파른 언덕과 비좁은 골목으로 조합된 마을에서 대설에 어떻게 대처하는지 확인할 수 있는 기회였습니다.
눈이 녹다말고 얼어붙은 골목 곳곳마다 염화칼슘이 뿌려져 있습니다. 염화칼슘을 보관한 집이 심심찮게 나옵니다. 여기저기선 빗자루질 소리가 들려옵니다. 골목 아래에선 개구장이들이 눈썰매를 타는군요. 서울 같지 않은 모습이랄까. 묘한 기분이 들었습니다.
"여기서부터 희망촌이라고?"
어떤 희망이 있는 곳인지 궁금해지는것이었습니다. 올라가 보기로 합니다.
걷는 길 뒤로 발자욱이 남습니다. 이계안이 걷는 길 뒤에 남은 그 자취.
서울걷기를 왜 하냐고들 묻습니다. 언젠가 저 발자욱의 이유를 말할 날이, 그런 기회가 제게 주어질지, 저도 설렘 반 불안 반입니다. 자신있게 답을 줄 수 있어야 할텐데요.
골목에서 한 무리의 젊은이들을 만났습니다. 연탄을 나르는 자원봉사단들. 광운대학교의 사회봉사단입니다. 가감없는 솔직한 마음을 담아 "좋은 일 하십니다"하고 반갑게 다가갔습니다.
"한장에 얼마예요?"
"600원이요."
"그래도 여긴 부담이 좀 적군요."
며칠전, 상도동에서 했던 연탄 나누기 자원봉사 때가 생각나더군요. 거기선 750원이었죠. 정말이지 같은 서울 하늘 아래인데도 지역마다 값이 다르군요.
돌아서다 보니 그들은 일손을 서두릅니다. 제가 희망촌에서 만난 희망은 바로 그들이었습니다.
몇번이고 넘어질 뻔하면서 위태위태하게 골목을 지납니다. 정말 한 사람만 지나갈 수 있는 외길이 길게도 이어지네요. 여기저기 쌓인 연탄, 고개돌려 숨 한번 크게 내 쉴 공간 없는 비좁은 골목. 저도 모르게 한숨을 내쉬는 것이었습니다.
"어디부터 어떻게 손을 봐야 하나"
뉴타운 건은 잠시 접죠. 도시생태환경 정비에 있어서, 이 곳에 도시가스를 들이고 기반을 재정비할 날을 생각해보면 솔직히 말해 저도 당장엔 마땅한 그림이 그려지질 않네요. 희망촌에 내가 선사할 희망은 뭐가 있을까요.
시계 톱니가 잠시 거꾸로 돌아간거 같아요. 정말 오랜만에 보네요. 연탄을 담은 전동리어카와 연탄배달부 아저씨. 반갑게 인사를 나누며 요새 정황을 묻습니다. 그리고 아래켠엔 마침 석유를 실은 차가 기름배달 중. 연탄, 기름, 가스... 삼박자가 혼재된 이곳은 서울입니다.
언덕을 내려오면서 되뇌었죠. '서울 동북부 중심도시 노원'이라는 어느 관공서의 간판을 보면서 말입니다.
"서울 동북부 중심도시...라."
언덕을 내려 또다른 고갯길로 오릅니다. 오르다 보니 상념에 잠겼습니다. 서울을 걸으며 이토록 침묵을 오래 끄는 것도 오랜만이군요.
"의원님, 저기..."
"응?"
수행원이 가리키는 곳을 보니, 방금 지나온 언덕과 동네가 내려다 보입니다. 뭐랄까. 눈 위에 덮인 그 모습은 멀리서 보니 한 폭의 그림같더군요. 가까이서 보면 시름하게 되고, 멀리서 보면 예뻐보이고. 기묘한 조화죠.
이 곳 노원구 당고개 지역을 걷다보니 몇가지 특색이 있네요. 이곳은 다른 곳보다 3가지가 많아요.
첫째로 사원이 많습니다. 이건 당고개라는 이름의 유래처럼, 서낭당이 모셔졌던 지역적 특색이 그대로 반영된 것일까요.
공중화장실이 많고요. 이건 여러모로 또 한번 생각하게 만드는 부분입니다. 아직 화장실이 구비되지 않은 집이 있다는 건데...
잘 들여다보세요. 수풀 뒤에 살짝 숨은 강아지. 정말 견공들이 많이도 보입니다. 설산 아래의 마을에서 마주친 주민들 수만큼 본 것 같아요. 현재 서울에선 좀처럼 보기 힘든 과거의 사람 냄새가 아직 남아 있고, 그러면서도 한편으로는 사람의 손길을 필요로 하는 곳. 제가 본 당고개는 그랬습니다.
계속 쌓이는 눈, 짧은 해로 마음은 급해지건만 조금 더 살펴보고 싶어졌습니다.
"학림사는 어떤 곳이려나?"
호기심이 동했습니다. 900미터 앞에 있다는 절을 직접 보고 싶어지는거죠. 여유가 없음에도 무리하게 발걸음을 뗐습니다.
호흡이 가빠질 무렵, 드디어 웅장한 자태가 눈에 들어옵니다. 연혁이 원효대사까지 올라간다는 학림사는 '직할사'라는 설명답게 매우 큰 절이었습니다.
조심스럽게, 부처님을 모시는 사찰 안으로 들어섭니다. 청아하고 적막한 경내에서 사진 찍기는 뭐하지만, 그래도 잠시 한 켠에 서서 사진 한 장을 찍어봅니다.
"잘 나오려나?"
이거... 역시나 안경에 서리가 껴서 잘 안되는군요.
이제 내려가야 겠군요. 다시 발자욱을 길게 흐뜨려 놓으면서 말예요.
언젠가 다시 한번 이 곳에 찾아와 사람들과 이야기를 나눠보고 싶습니다. '시장이 되기 전, 이곳에 찾아왔었는데 그 땐 정말이지 눈이 소복하게도 쌓였었고, 그곳은 정말이지...' 하며 말예요.
제 손주가 될 수도 있겠고, 친구 목희일수도 있겠네요. 그게 아니면 주민들일지도. 그들은 내가 남겼던 발자욱에 어떤 의미가 함께 남았는지를 물을 것입니다. 난 '노력했네'로 운을 뗀 뒤, 보다 자신있게 그 질문에 답을 내어놓고 싶어요.
